The dresser, or chest of drawers, was initially developed in the mid-17th century and consisted of a standard chest with drawers in the base. Near the end of the 1600s, they were made entirely from drawers, and some included flat slides on the top that could be pulled out to create additional table space.
Drawer pulls were frequently made of wood, which then later moved into brass pulls with ornamental backings. As time went on, different countries and trends influenced the look of dressers, with the rectangular shapes being modified. Chinoiserie brought bevelled corners, decorations made from intersecting bars were added, as well as bow front and serpentine designs. During the Regency period, pilasters, or projecting details became common.
In addition to the shorter, wider dressers, highboys or tallboys were introduced. These dresser styles are often narrower than a standard dresser while also being taller. Occasionally the drawers may go all the way to the floor, but they may also be featured on legs.
