Vanities, also sometimes referred to as dressing tables, are pieces of furniture used when getting ready. Early vanities included a cistern and basin drawer and were used to wash the face and remove cosmetics. Traditionally, it was used primarily by the high-class members of society, with both men and women finding a use for them. Men would store razors, oils and hair care products in the vanity while women would use them to store perfumes and cosmetics.
The structure of the original vanities consisted of a fold-down top covering a washbasin. As time went on, the table became smaller and more elaborate, the basin disappeared, and small drawers were added to replace the basin storage.
As different furniture styles became popular, the appearance of vanities changed as well. From additional drawers to different shaped mirrors, legs and stools, the designs of the times heavily influenced the appearance and utility of the vanity. In the early 1900s, their appearance in films lead to an increase in their popularity.
While today’s bathrooms often have shelving, large mirrors and cabinetry making vanities less common, they are still considered to be a luxury for some.
