Sectionals are also popular designs, consisting of multiple sections that join together to fit more adequately in oddly shaped spaces or where there are walls or other furniture to go around.

The materials used in sofas vary greatly depending on the period, design and style. Generally, they all consist of a frame, some kind of padding, and a covering. The frame is often made from wood but can also be created using steel and plastic. Modern cushion filling is often foam, while the covering is traditionally leather, vinyl or some variant of fabric including linen and velvet.
